Man arrested as Sydney motel siege ends

A five-hour siege in Sydney’s inner west has ended with a man in hospital.

Police say a 26-year-old man is under arrest following a stand-off at the Garden Lodge motel in Haberfield, which began about 3.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday and ended at 9pm.

The man was bitten by a police dog and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment. Multiple charges are expected to be laid on his release.

Officers say the stand-off was sparked by the alleged theft of a motel guest’s car.

They believe the arrested man had stolen a car from the motel car park, driven it around and returned it with some structural damage.

Police say they tried to confront the 26-year-old in his room but the man barricaded himself in, holding off officers with a knife.

He spoke to negotiators until 8.30pm, when he broke off contact.
