Man arrested in disappearance of 6-year-old NY boy taken for psych exam

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The man who police say has confessed to killing a 6-year-old boy in one of New York‘s most notorious missing child cases has been taken to a hospital for a psychological evaluation.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Pedro Hernandez was checked out by doctors early Friday at Bellevue Hospital. The official wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Hernandez is scheduled to be arraigned later Friday in the 1979 slaying of Etan Patz. The boy vanished while making his way to his school bus stop alone for the first time.

Police say Hernandez has confessed to killing the child.

Friday marks the 33rd anniversary of the boy’s disappearance.
