Man dies in police custody



UPDATE 4.30pm: A DOZEN heavily armed police have entered a block of flats where a man fell to his death today.


The officers, carrying a battering ram, are at high-rise Ministry of Housing in Nicholson St, Carlton.

Police were called to the ninth floor of the tower after calls from residents said someone was trying to break into a neighbouring flat.

A “representative” of the man inside the flat also contacted 000.

Assistant Commissioner Steve Fontana said they arrived to find someone trying to crawl through a hole in the flat’s door.

The officers cuffed that man but could not find the other.

A man’s body was found soon after on the ground.

Police later confirmed they had tracked down the frightened man who had been inside the flat.

Homicide squad detectives are investigating the death.

Information earlier remained sketchy, but a police spokeswoman said the man died on Nicholson St while in the custody of police.

Ethical Standards Department detectives are overseeing the investigation.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics were called to treat the man who had fallen from a balcony at 2.30pm and died at the scene.
