Many forced to flee homes in NW Pakistan

According to an international humanitarian agency, more than a quarter of a million people, mostly women and children, have been forced to flee their homes following fights between Pakistani troops and pro-Taliban militants in Khyber tribal agency since January.

“The Army operation against Taliban militants forced us to flee our homes and take refugee here. They promised us to provide food and shelter… there is neither food nor proper shelter, we are in distress,” a refugee told Press TV.

The displaced people have started flooding to district Nowshera and Peshawar, searching for shelter and food in the Jalozai Camp which has now become the country’s largest refugee camp.

The displaced tribal groups from Khyber agency, who are left at the mercy of foreign donors, have urged the government to restore peace in their area, making it possible for their safe return home.

There have been several waves of displacement from the northwestern parts of Pakistan since 2004, with the biggest exodus in 2009 when more than two million people were reportedly displaced.

The fresh massive displacement of tribal people from Khyber agency is a reminder that the challenge of internal displacement in Pakistan is far from over and many believe the waves of displacement will continue as long as Pakistan fights the so-called US-led war on terror.
