MEPs call for European Parliament TV channel to be axed

A parliament spokesman confirmed that “different options were being studied “to make audio-visual material on Parliament’s work available to a wide audience, so as not to discard the positive aspects of Europarl TV”.

She said the assembly did not want to “deprive itself of a basic communication tool to make people more aware of what is happening at the parliament in a time when bridging the gap between the EU institutions and the public is of essential importance”.

Marta Andreasen, an MEP for the UK Independence Party, echoed the growing consensus among many MEPs for the channel to be scrapped.

“In any other world a TV station with such a dismal performance would just be wound up. Not so in this Parliament where such vanity projects are rewarded with huge sums of taxpayers cash. Television audiences are a sophisticated bunch of people, they know when objectivity is replaced with sycophancy. This fact is born out in the appalling viewing figures. Europarl TV is an absurdity that needs to scrapped,” she said.
