Women who work long hours ‘more likely to put on weight’

The study said employed women may be more likely to gain weight because they have less time for exercise, sleeping and preparing home-cooked meals.

The lead author, Nicole Au, from Melbourne’s Monash University, said the impact of long work hours was particularly evident among the women who gained the most weight.

“Working women are faced with so many different time pressures, which leaves them with less time to engage in physical activity and less time to prepare healthy meals,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The study found that 55 per cent of the women gained weight over two years and 31 per cent lost weight.

“Employed women had the greatest mean weight change (1.6 per cent), and the smallest mean weight loss among losers,” the study said. “Among the employed sample, mean changes in weight increased with work hours (from 1.5 per cent for part-time hours to 1.9 per cent for very long hours).”
