Kalajzich vows to pursue cops over jailing

Andrew Kalajzich says he will continue to pursue police for having him locked up for 25 years for murdering his wife, Megan.

The 71-year-old former millionaire hotelier, who was released from Silverwater jail in February, has told the Seven Network he wants justice for missing out on half his adult life.

“I’ll never give up because I didn’t commit this crime,” Kalajzich said.

“One way or another, I will pursue this matter and I will pursue the people that were involved in having me convicted and spending 25 years in jail.”

Kalajzich was jailed for life in May 1988 for contracting a hitman to shoot his wife twice in the head at their Fairlight home, near Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches, on January 27, 1986.

But the founder of the Manly Pacific International Hotel alleges police set him up.

“The detective in charge of the case believed that I was guilty,” Kalajzich said.

“In fact, a person overheard the inspector of Manly police say on the night of the murder, he walked into my home and he made the comment, `He’s done it, I want his head on a plate’.”

Hitman Franciscus Bill Vandenberg, who hanged himself in Long Bay jail in 1988, had said he arranged for Kalajzich to roll off the bed where Megan was shot.

But Kalajzich said he had never met Vandenberg and only survived because the bullet “jammed in the chamber”.

“That’s why I’m alive today,” Kalajzich said.

Kalajzich described the idea of hiring a hitman as “insane” when he “could have done that myself” instead of hiring an “idiot”.

“Megan, lying on this bed, a blood-soaked bed. Why would I want to murder my wife and be present and watch her die?” he said.

Kalajzich also admitted to being “infatuated” with another woman.

An 18-month inquiry by retired judge John Slattery concluded in 1995 that Kalajzich was guilty of murder, with the case against him even stronger.

His sentence was changed to a minimum of 25 years in 1997 under truth in sentencing legislation.
