Scientists from the universities of Bristol and Sussex have developed a tractor beam in the spirit of Star Trek, bringing science fiction to life.
The real tractor beam utilizes a high – amplitude sound wave in order to cause levitation, move objects from their original location and even rotate objects without making contact with them.
According to the researchers, this “mechanical wave” creates a sonic tractor beam that is able to manipulate objects as small as 1/7th of an inch in diameter.
The ultrasound wave vibrates at 40 kilohertz, which is a frequency 2 times below the lowest frequency a human can hear. This sound was created using 64 miniature loudspeakers called transducers which in turn manifests “acoustic holograms” that actually control and manipulate objects.
Researchers were able to use “a simple wave will just push the particle in the direction of propagation”; however with multiple waves interfering with each other, the largest “object moved using the device was a 4 mm bead made of a light plastic called polystyrene.”
Yet, “with special high-power transducers it would be possible to levitate even steel balls.”
This ultrasound beam would not be used for future space travel because “sound cannot travel through the void of space”, but this technology could be used for medical applications because it could “enable the manipulation of clots, kidney stones, drug capsules, microsurgical instruments or cells inside our body without any incision.”
