Mubarak says he committed no crime, calls January 25 Revolution ‘weird’

TCP : In his first published comments since being found not guilty of graft and cleared of charges of murdering protesters demonstrating against his rule in 2011, former President Hosni Mubarak said in a phone call with Sada El-Balad TV he “didn’t commit any crime,” and gave no orders during the January 25 Revolution.

He added he laughed when he listened to the first verdict issued by the court on June 2, 2012 sentencing him and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly to life in prison, and eagerly awaited Saturday’s verdict issued by Judge Mahmoud al-Rashidy.

Answering a question about the January 25 Revolution, Mubarak said he could not discuss it on the phone, but did say he considered the popular uprising that ultimately ended his 30-year rule “weird.”

Mubarak was not the only figure cleared and acquitted in Saturday’s proceedings to speak to the media.

Fugitive businessman Hussein Salem, who was acquitted of graft alongside Mubarak, said in another phone interview with Sada El-Balad he was “packing his luggage” and coming back to Egypt to take part in projects like the Suez Canal expansion.

For his part, Maj. Gen. Adly Fayed, a former deputy interior minister, told the same channel the case lacked incriminating evidence.

Also, Maj. Gen. Ismail el-Shaer, the former director of Cairo security, told Sada El-Balad the January 25 Revolution was a conspiracy. “If it had happened in the United States, it would have fallen apart by now, but not in Egypt,” he said.
