Joselin Barrera has filed a lawsuit in the Delaware Superior Court through 3 different law firms representing other clients who have suffered from the effects of being exposed to Monsanto’s Round Up.

Elias de la Garza, a migrant farm worker and landscaper, has joined the lawsuit because he has been diagnosed with cancer due to contact with glyphosate.

Barrera’s clam is that she has developed non – Hodgkin lymphoma because of direct exposure to glyphosate, the premier ingredient in Round Up.

This joint lawsuit is one of several lawsuits that have been filed in Los Angeles and New York , claiming the same issues.

These other lawsuits concern Enrique Rubio who has been diagnosed with bone cancer, and Judi Fitzgerald who suffers from leukemia, say that Round Up caused their conditions and Monsanto’s “falsified data [and] prolonged campaign of misinformation” has directly caused the public and government agencies to believe things about their product that is not true.

Fitzgerald’s case has been dismissed without prejudice , and she has joined her claims with Barrera’s complaint.

Attorney Michael McDivitt, who has complied 50 different cases in Colorado for individuals damaged by glyphosates, said: “We can prove that Monsanto knew about the dangers of glyphosate. There are a lot of studies showing glyphosate causes these cancers.”

Last year, researchers The National Institutes of Health (NIH) concluded in a study that GM foods contain pesticide residue has shown to produce human cellular endocrine disruptors measured at 1000 times below.

Corroborating the NIH, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) found that “GM foods pose a serious health risk.”

Eight hundred scientists from the Institute of Science in Society (ISS) have come together from all across the globe to demand that Monsanto’s GM experiment end.

In an open letter “from world scientists to all governments concerning genetically modified organisms” it was expressed that “GM crops offer no benefits to farmers or consumers. Instead, many problems have been identified, including yield drag, increased herbicide use, erratic performance, and poor economic returns to farmers. GM crops also intensify corporate monopoly on food, which is driving family farmers to destitution, and preventing the essential shift to sustainable agriculture that can guarantee food security and health around the world.”

The letter states: “We urge the US Congress to reject GM crops as both hazardous and contrary to the interest of family farmers; and to support research and development of sustainable agricultural methods that can truly benefit family farmers all over the world. We, the undersigned scientists, call for the immediate suspension of all environmental releases of GM crops and products, both commercially and in open field trials, for at least 5 years; for patents on living processes, organisms, seeds, cell lines and genes to be revoked and banned; and for a comprehensive public enquiry into the future of agriculture and food security for all.”

Back in July of this year, Monsanto has employed a panel of “scientific experts” to review glyphosate, a chemical component of their RoundUp Ready herbicide in order to answer questions about the dangers of the product to human health.

Intertek Scientific & Regulatory Consultancy (ISRC) has been hired by Monsanto to validate or invalidate the World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancers (IARC) claim that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans”.

Glyphosate now falls under the second level of concern; meaning it is classified as a “probable or possible carcinogen” and those exposed to the chemical could have an elevated risk for developing cancer.

Conversely, Monsanto vehemently disagreed with the IARC: “All labeled uses of glyphosate are safe for human health and supported by one of the most extensive worldwide human health databases ever compiled on an agricultural product. In fact, every glyphosate-based herbicide on the market meets the rigorous standards set by regulatory and health authorities to protect human health.”

Monsanto continued: “We believe conclusions about a matter as important as human safety must be non-biased, thorough and based on quality science that adheres to internationally recognized standards. We join others in viewing IARC’s process and its assessment with strong skepticism. IARC has previously come under criticism for both its process and demonstrated bias.”

The chemical giant argues that “the IARC classification is not based on new data. Other regulatory agencies, including the German government, have previously reviewed the same studies. The Germans concluded that glyphosate was unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk in humans.”

Now the ISRC, a for-hire consultation firm made up of “experts” who give “advice and practical solutions” that are designed to “optimize [a] company’s success and minimize risk” have been tasked with proving the IARC incorrect.

ISRC offers consulting in various industries such as:

• Food Scientific and Regulatory Consulting
• Scientific and Regulatory Support for Consumer Products
• Food Biotechnology (GMO) Services

ISRC has a long list of clients , including:

• Citgo
• ConocoPhillips
• Government of Mozambique
• Kraft Foods
• Teck Coal
• Unilever

A study published in 2013 on the adverse effects of glyphosate coalesces the many effects on the human body and how they work together to trigger health issues such as:

• Gastrointestinal disease
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• Obesity
• Alzheimer’s disease

The researchers explained: “humans exposed to glyphosate have decreased levels of the amino acid tryptophan, which is necessary for active signaling of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Suppressed serotonin levels have been associated with weight gain, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.”
