N Korea floods death toll rises to 88

According to a report released on Saturday by Pyongyang’s official news agency KCNA, over 5,000 houses were washed away and more than 12,030 others were destroyed in a week of floods.

The death toll is a dramatic increase from an earlier figure of eight, which was reported on Wednesday.

The report added that over 300 public buildings and infrastructures, including educational and health-care facilities and 60 factories took a major hit from the heavy rain falls and typhoons.

Almost 63,000 people were left homeless with thousands of houses damaged or destroyed by the floods, which started on July 18.

The biggest loss of human life was in two counties of South Pyongyang Province, which were hit by torrential rains on Monday and Tuesday.

The floods also caused inundation of 4,800 hectares of cropland, while destroying most roads and a host of bridges across the country.

Authorities have also issued evacuation orders in disaster hit areas.
