NAPLAN skews curriculum study

A study has found teachers are shunning science, arts and social and environmental studies in favour of literacy and numeracy to boost NAPLAN results.

Professor Barbara Comber from the Queensland University of Technology says the mandatory national tests have created pressure on teachers to narrow the curriculum in the first term of the year.

Staff in schools with a high proportion of migrants are also taking on heavy workloads as they strive to prepare their students.

The study comes as the state government touted the success of introducing a prep year into Queensland schools, following standout NAPLAN results released today.
