Nervous wait as more Qld floods forecast

Residents in low-lying areas of Charleville are being evacuated as the Warrego River continues to rise and is now expected to breach the town’s levee by noon on Saturday.

Police began doorknocking homes in the central Queensland town about 1am (AEST) on Saturday, advising people who live in areas devastated by the 1997 floods to head to a temporary centre at the town’s racecourse.

Floodwaters inundated the towns of Mitchell and Roma on Friday, with rescuers scrambling hundreds of residents to safety.

Charleville, about 160km west, is next in line and residents are on tenterhooks as they wait to see if their homes will also be flooded.

Authorities are warning the Warrego River is expected to breach the town’s levee by noon (AEST) on Saturday.

“If that happens, it will affect the whole town,” Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said on Friday.

The local council was checking the town’s 7.7-metre-high levee system.

In Mitchell, where 75 per cent of the town was under water, 300 of the community’s 750 residents had to be flown out of an evacuation centre on Friday after it became isolated.

In Roma, all 13,000 residents were told to seek refuge on higher ground as the Bungil Creek crept beyond the March 2010 flood level of 8.1 metres.

There are grave fears that at least one life has been lost after a woman was swept away from her car at Roma.

Police called off the search on Friday night and said it would resume at first light on Saturday.

The Insurance Council of Australia declared a catastrophe for flood-affected parts of southwest Queensland.

A spokesman said an insurance industry taskforce would work with local authorities to help process claims.
