Newman nixes doubts with gusto

On his 100th day as Queensland premier, Campbell Newman says he’s still a little taken aback by what he’s managed to pull off.

The realisation – “I’m the premier of Queensland!” – still daunts the man who steered the Liberal National Party (LNP) to a landslide win at the March 24 election.

The feeling lasts about two minutes after waking, and then he approaches the day “with gusto”, he told reporters.

Mr Newman told the party faithful in Toowoomba on Tuesday his government had achieved every goal in its 100-day action plan.

His personal favourites were freezing car registration, reintroducing the stamp duty concession and establishing 17 hospital boards to decentralise health services.

In the next 100 days, he will target four per cent unemployment, sorting out the state’s finances and creating an efficient public service.

As Mr Newman takes the razor to public service jobs, he says the cuts sadden him.

But the public appears to be on side, with about 52.7 per cent of 1000 Queenslanders in a ReachTel telephone poll in favour of the cuts.

Some 51.3 per cent believed he is doing a good job or very good job as premier.
