Netanyahu cuts contacts with EU

Days of Palestine, Jerusalem –Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu ordered on Sunday suspension of contacts with EU over the latter’s labelling of settlement products.

In a statement for the Israeli foreign ministry, the Israeli occupation is to maintain diplomatic contacts with “individual” EU countries, but not with EU institutions.

The decision came in the wake of the EU recommendation of labelling products of illegal Israeli settlements in the EU markets.

Meanwhile, the EU had no immediate response, with one EU official saying that the organisation was first trying to understand the implications of the statement.

Recently, Netanyahu blasted the EU’s decision, calling it “absolutely absurd and morally abhorrent, because on the soil of Europe within living memory, Jewish products were labeled, Jewish stores were labeled.”

The EU’s ambassador to the Jewish state Lars Faaborg-Andersen hit back against any comparisons with Nazi boycotts of Jewish businesses, saying this was a “distortion of history and belittlement of the crimes of the Nazis, and the memory of their victims.”

Faaborg-Andersen unequivocally refuted claims that the settlement labelling was tantamount to a boycott of Israeli products.
