New Military-Issued Jewish Prayer Book Has Foreword Written by Barack Obama

The U.S. Military recently released a collaborative effort between Orthodox, Conservative and Reform rabbis, coming together to publish a Jewish prayer book or Siddur, just in time for Passover. The siddur is the first issued by the U.S. military since World War II. The siddur also includes a foreword written by President Obama.

In the past, a variety of different prayer books were used by Jewish chaplains to lead military services, but until now there has not been a uniform text. This meant that worship services would vary – sometimes significantly – as a Jewish soldier moved between bases.

The Jewish Community Centers Association of North America, said “We had the ability to move freely through their prayer books, allowing us to create a book that each rabbi can use differently.” Retired Rear Adm. Rabbi Harold Robinson, director of the council, continued, saying that “for each soldier, sailor or Marine, it will be the same, no matter where he or she is stationed.”

Reactions to the inclusion of a foreword written by President Obama have been mixed. Some have lauded the President for including forwarding remarks in preface, while others see it as invasive: implanting politics, and government in religion. Does the forward go too far? Or was it a well-meaning attempt at reaching out to a minority religious group in the U.S. Military?
