New Obama plan to help math, science teacher prep

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will announce on Tuesday a new plan to prepare math and science teachers when he hosts the second White House Science Fair.

The White House says his upcoming budget will seek $80 million from Congress for a new Education Department competition to support math and science teacher preparation programs. Among the other related initiatives he’ll announce is $22 million in investments from the private sector to support math and science efforts, the White House said.

Obama wants to prepare more teachers and to train a million additional math, technology, engineering and science graduates over the next decade.

The White House fair celebrates the student winners of a range of competitions from across the country.

Obama made a similar request to Congress last year that didn’t pass.
