Newton under care in US mental facility

Troubled actor Matthew Newton is under 24-hour supervision in a mental health facility in the United States, his lawyer has told a Sydney court.

Newton is listed to stand trial in the US on July 25 on charges relating to incidents at a Miami restaurant and a hotel in April, his lawyer Chris Murphy told Downing Centre Local Court on Monday.

But this is likely to be adjourned for four to six weeks to allow the actor to be dealt with under mental health provisions, Mr Murphy said.

“I’m able to say since he’s been in this facility, I’ve been told … there’s been some profound developments in relation to his medication,” Mr Murphy told Deputy Chief Magistrate Jane Mottley.

Newton, the son of showbusiness couple Bert and Patti Newton, is charged with punching taxi driver Mohsen Khayami, 66, in the neck while in his taxi at Crows Nest in northern Sydney on December 4.

He is also charged with punching Mr Khayami twice in the region of his head.

Mr Murphy was on Monday seeking to adjourn that Sydney matter until after the US matters had been dealt with.

“His redemption is a difficult, long path,” Mr Murphy said.

“He’s in a mental care facility under 24-hour supervision. He’s not going anywhere.”

The court has previously been told Newton, who suffers from bipolar and obsessive compulsive disorders, relocated to the US to escape media and public attention in Australia.

While there, he was charged with resisting a police officer and trespassing at popular Miami watering hole Mr Moe’s Restaurant and Bar on April 6.

Two weeks later, he was charged with battery and resisting arrest without violence after he allegedly confronted a hotel clerk.

He has pleaded not guilty to all four charges.

Mr Murphy became heated while arguing for a lengthy adjournment.

“This case is getting out of control,” Mr Murphy said.

“The media scrum turns up, there are more court reports in the newspaper … This man is trying to get fixed.”

Ms Mottley ordered Mr Murphy to appear on August 6 to give an update on Newton’s US matters.
