Nicolas Sarkozy: France can no longer continue this way

That means both Hollande, who had a slight lead in Sunday’s vote, and the
incumbent Sarkozy are sure to reach out to the fringes, likely with
protectionist rhetoric at a time when Europe is seeking steady leadership
from France to help lead it out of its catastrophic debt crisis.

And on the campaign trail in Quimper, Hollande, who won 28.63 per cent of
votes, a shade above Sarkozy’s 27.18 per cent according to final results
published by the interior ministry, attacked his rival for attempting to
turn ‘failure into success’.

“Yesterday, he tried to make out what was a failure, to be a success. He
was happy. He is like that. He also thinks his term was a success. More than
73 per cent of the French think the opposite. But he continues to think that
he must go on,” Hollande told a crowd of supporters who turned up to
show their support for their favourite at the open-air rally, despite wind
and rain.
