No grand deal with Murdoch: UK PM

At the Leveson Inquiry this week, Rupert Murdoch’s son, James, said he talked with Cameron about his father’s News Corporation’s bid to take over satellite broadcaster BSkyB at a private Christmas dinner back in 2010.

The Huffington Post UK reported on Sunday 29 April that Cameron admitted he discussed News Corporation’s BSkyB deal with James Murdoch at a Christmas party thrown in Oxfordshire by then News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks.

However, Cameron maintained that it was “not true” that he agreed to help the Murdochs handle the BSkyB deal in exchange for favorable coverage from the media giant’s newspapers.

“It would be absolutely wrong for there to be any sort of deal and there wasn’t,” said Cameron. “There was no grand deal.”

Furthermore, Cameron supported Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt who may be obliged to resign if it is proved that he misled the MPs about his handling the BSkyB deal.

“I don’t believe Jeremy Hunt broke the ministerial code,” said Cameron.

This comes as an Independent on Sunday investigation has accused Hunt of misleading the House of Commons maintaining that under Britain’s ministerial code, misleading parliament carries an immediate obligation to resign.
