With a hand carefully positioned under its huge belly, Andy O’Connor poses with the catch of his life.
The novice angler had just spent 15 exhausting minutes battling to land the monster pike.
When he weighed it, he was amazed to discover it tipped the scales at exactly 46lb – equalling the 190-year-old record for the biggest pike caught in England.
How big? Andy O’Conner set the prized record for the biggest pike caught in England after landing the huge beast, nicknamed the Wykeham Whacker
The 20-year-old roofer from Hull was about to pack up and go home when the enormous fish took his line.
He said: ‘I had caught a small trout
earlier in the day and me and a friend were about to call it a day when
my float started going.
‘As soon as I got a feel of it I knew
it was a big one, but when it came towards the net I saw just how big it
was and nerves nearly got the better of me.’
He said he was shaking with excitement when the weight was confirmed and ‘let out a bit of a scream’.
He added: ‘The English record has been
held for such a long time. It’s a shame that I could only equal it and
not beat it. Maybe I will next time.’
The reel deal: Roofer Andy kept his composure to successfully reel in and net the monster from the deep
which tipped the scales at a mighty 46lbs
The pike – nicknamed the Wykeham Whacker – was caught at a fishery near Scarborough before being put back.
It equalled the record that was set in 1822 by CF Gifford in Brewood, Staffordshire.
Neville Fickling, of the Pike Anglers
Club of Great Britain, said: ‘Andy has set the equal record for the
biggest pike caught in England.
‘Obviously the 1822 catch can’t be authenticated, unlike Andy’s, but the story of it has stood the test of time.’
However Mr O’Connor’s catch is still
13oz off the current British record which was set by Roy Lewis in
Llandegfedd, Wales, in 1992.

“Fisherman smashes 190-year-old record by catching a 46lb pike”… “it tipped the scales at exactly 46lb – equalling the 190-year-old record for the biggest pike caught in England.” Seems an odd use of the word “smashes”…

So far I have accumulated 60 red arrows by zilch in the way of any reasoned reponse to my original question. This is not very impressive and reveals a disturbing degree of irrationality amongst some DM readers. I ask you again: Can somebody please explain to me why pulling an animal around by a hook embedded in its mouth, tongue, throat or stomach is acceptable behaviour? I just don’t get it. If this was done to another chordate animal (i.e. a fish is in the same taxonomic phylum as mammals) then there would be justifiable uproar. Why are fish allowed to be treated this way? Please don’t tell me they are immune from pain and stress – that simply isn’t true. Is it because fish have the misfortune to be born without vocal cords so they are unable to express their pain so anglers can delude themselves that their ‘sport’ is harmless? How many people would still fish if the fish could actually scream? Think about it. —
No more irrational than thinking Iran is about to nuke yo ass?
