NSA considers Snowden amnesty

The US National Security Agency is offering a controversial amnesty to American whistleblower Edward J. Snowden in exchange for the confidential documents he is keeping about the super spy agency.

The NSA claims Snowden’s disclosures about its surveillance programs have caused significant damage to the US national security since June when he first leaked the information.

Officials from the State Department have opposed the amnesty offer.

“Our position has not changed,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. “Mr Snowden is facing very serious charges and should return to the United States to face them.”

Snowden, a former NSA contractor, currently lives in Russia where he has been granted a temporary asylum. He is accused by the Justice Department of stealing government property and classified information.

The Justice Department – the body in charge of issuing such an amnesty – h s not yet reacted to the agency’s offer.

Richard Ledgett , the NSA official in charge of assessing the alleged damage caused by Snowden’s leaks, has said, “I would need assurances that the remainder of the data could be secured, and my bar for those assurances would be very high. It would be more than just an assertion on his part.”

US intelligence officials say they may never know the entirety of what Snowden extracted from classified government computers.

Snowden has so far disclosed documents showing that the US government is conducting espionage activities on both American and foreign nationals, including the world leaders.
