NSW residents brace for hail, floods

Residents in northern NSW have been warned to brace for large hailstones, flash floods, heavy rain and strong winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning shortly before 10pm (AEDT) on Sunday, telling people to be prepared in the major coastal cities of Newcastle and Gosford, along with the northern inland towns of Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree and Narrabri.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in central Sydney on Sunday night, with Rose Bay in the eastern suburbs receiving 24 millimetres in 10 minutes.

A severe thunderstorm warning was cancelled for the Illawarra, Central West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western districts.
