A man is fighting for his life after crashing his car into a tree east of Melbourne.

Police believe the 21-year-old had been travelling west along the Warburton Highway at Launching Place when he lost control of his car about 10pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.

He has been airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries.
