The National Rifle Association (NRA) behaved like immature children during President Obama’s speech on his plan to tighten gun control via executive orders.
On Twitter, the NRA used pretentiousness as if rallying up a group of 5th graders to a schoolyard fight; however the subject matter is quite serious considering over 80 people a day die due to gun-violence.
2nd Amendment “defenders” , the conservative media and alternative media rallied to their audience of Republicans on how the right to bear arms was being threatened by making sure the person selling the gun is a licensed dealer who will conduct a background check on the purchaser before exchanging the firearm.
Chuck James, former chief deputy attorney general for Virginia and current gun store owner, claims that it is “an unconstitutional burden on the right to buy arms” to have a background check run every time. James also complained that private persons or estates should not be forced to obtain a license to sell their guns to dealers or private individuals.
NRA supporters complained that now they might have to deal with smart-gun technology to ensure gun safety, or manufacturers would be required to report lost guns that go unaccounted for in transit to the gun dealer.
Journalist Cliff Schecter said the reaction of the “republican stoolies … was swift severe, and stupefied” because out of the mouths of these “poor (mostly) white souls” came “cries of tyranny when the president is doing something 90 percent of Americans (and 85 percent of gun owners) support are rich indeed.”
To counter the actions of recent days, the NRA has resorted to calling in their troops by making apocalyptic predictions and “straight-up threatening and encouraging violence against opponents”.
In order to inspire their knee-jerk audience, the NRA published an article with a picture of nooses and the intimation that “radical” democrats should be hanged for trying to start a war over gun rights.
And perhaps the reason for this show of force by the NRA is because these executive orders address problems such as the gun show loophole, a.k.a. private sales of firearms that rarely involve a background check of the purchaser. These types of sales go on without the involvement of a licensed dealer.
This includes the person who rents a regular table at gun shows, has his or her own business cards, or processes credit card transactions.
The president is attempting to reduce those sales because Johns Hopkins University (JHU) conducted a study revealing that background checks contribute heavily to the reduction of gun violence.
Support for the president’s measures is across the board , including responsible gun owners who do not agree with the guerilla tactics of the NRA, but who want to ensure “common sense” regulations are in place to protect everyone.
In the end, President Obama called for :
- Clarification on who is “in the business” of selling firearms and ensuring they are federally licensed to do so
- All prospective buyers must have a background check run on them
- 230 FBI agents to process the increase in background checks
- Utilization of smart-gun technology to reduce accidental shootings
- Congress provide $500 million in mental health care
- Better tracking of “lost” firearms
- Accountability of manufacturers for missing weapons
- Restricting trusts or corporations from purchasing guns without background checks
Adam Winkler, constitutional law professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Law School explained that the president’s measures are legal “because they merely clarify existing law and restate what courts have already said about gun sales.”
Winkler added: “It’s also designed to make it difficult to challenge because it was really issued as guidance to prosecutors rather than a formal new rule setting out who can sell guns and who can’t.”
