Off Duty LAPD Officer Shoots and Kills Dog While Working Security

A dog was shot by a off duty police officer on a film set in Downtown Los Angeles.

The owner of a dog shot by an off duty Los Angeles police officer downtown last friday has disputed the police account of what happened. The owner said the pitbull was not aggressive and did not attack the officer.

A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department, Jenny Hauser said that the dog was shot by the off-duty police officer in the 400 block of South Main Street about 11:40 a.m, when an argument broke out with the dog’s owner.

It has been reported that the show being filmed was the second season of Hulu’s “Chance,”

According to police, while the officer and the man were arguing, the so called ‘aggressive’ dog approached and attacked the officer. The officer then shot the dog, instantly killing it.

But the man’s attorney, Ben Meiselas, said that things unfolded differently. In an interview late Friday, he said his client, Emry Zumreet, was driving when the officer blocked all the traffic by the movie shoot. Meiselas said there was some kind of dispute between his client and the officer, who then opened the door of Zumreet’s car.

Zumreet got out of the vehicle, and then the officer drew out a handgun. At that point, the pitbull jumped out of the vehicle through the open door.

The attorney has insisted the animal never attacked the officer.

“He executed the dog because it was a pit bull,” the attorney said, adding that several witnesses have come forward to say the officer’s actions were unprovoked.

Meiselas said his client called the Los Angeles Police for help but was when the officers arrived he was arrested.

Hauser said the officer did suffer minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital and the man he was arguing with was detained.

Police did not immediately identify the officer or say what the argument was about.
