Officers suspended on UK custody death

Five British police officers and two support staff were among those who were fired after an initial assessment by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) on the death in police custody of 39-year-old Leon Briggs.

On November 4, Briggs was restrained and taken to Luton police station where he was detained under the Mental Health Act. Upon falling ill, he was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Bedfordshire Police chief constable Colette Paul said the suspension of British police officers “in no way jumps to any conclusion” about the investigation currently being carried out by the police watchdog.

On November 11, family and friends of Briggs attended a public meeting in Luton and demanded answers from the force over the custody death.

Last month, activists also marched in central London to demand justice for those who died under the British police custody.

Around two hundred people joined the fifteenth annual rally of the United Friends and Family Campaign (UFFC) in the British capital on Saturday, October 26, calling for greater levels of accountability for officers responsible for custody deaths in the UK.

According to data compiled by the Inquest charity, more than 1,400 people have died in England and Wales either in custody or following other police contact since 1990.
