Australia’s oldest woman has died in Queensland at the grand old age of 112.

Miriam Schmierer died on Thursday at Masters Lodge nursing home in Hervey Bay.

Family and care staff were by her side.

She had celebrated her birthday only last month.

She was born on a dairy farm near Gatton in Queensland’s south east in 1899 and raised her family on farms at Gayndah and Maleny.

The great great grandmother spent the last 20 years at the Blue Care Masters Lodge nursing home in the suburb of Pialba.

Service manager Jennifer Howell said Ms Schmierer had been a good role model with an infectious smile and an “inimitable wit”.

Over the last few years Ms Schmierer gave regular media interviews on her birthday.

She put her longevity down to a range of things, including her love of letter writing, parsley tea and her faith in God.
