Olympics, Jubilee ‘non-events’ in UK

A study by the TripAdvisor Industry Index shows 58 percent of all hoteliers and bed and breakfast (BB) accommodation providers believe the two events will be looked back as no boost for the industry.

The surveyors said some of the 2,500 accommodation owners even said the Olympics had a negative impact on the industry.

“The Olympics has made summer trading difficult – overseas custom is down significantly on last year,” one the respondents said.

There were a raft of reports from several hoteliers and tour operators before the Olympics that their sales have slumped for this summer due to the Games backlash.

Independent observers also recognized the plunge and blamed it on the high hotel prices for July and August, when the Games will be running, with reports saying prices were up to ten-fold more than last year.
