Two Australian men are being treated for serious stab wounds in Bali following a fight at a bar.

THE wife of an Australian man stabbed during a bar fight in Bali says he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

One of two Australian men stabbed at the Bounty Discotheque near Kuta Beach after a fight broke out in the early hours of Friday has returned home while the other remains in a serious condition in a hospital in Bali.

It is understood that Jake Benjamin Whitehead, who was stabbed in the stomach during the fight, returned to Australia on Saturday morning after boarding a flight from Bali late on Friday night.

The second victim, who was stabbed in the chest, is still recovering in the intensive care unit at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar.

The 26-year-old, identified by Bali Police only as Chris, has regained consciousness and is in a serious but stable condition.

Police said the fight broke out about 2am (0500 AEDT) after the alleged attacker spilled a drink that belonged to one of the victims.

“He was asked to replace the drink, but then he got angry and there was a fight between the perpetrator and the victims,” Bali Police spokesman Hariadi told AAP late on Friday.

But the wife of the man identified as Chris said her husband was not involved and was simply standing nearby when the incident occurred.

The woman gave her name only as Mandy.

“My husband was stabbed by accident,” she told reporters outside the hospital on Saturday.

“There was a fight and he got stabbed in the chest. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The couple were on holiday in Bali with a young child.

Mr Whitehead, who has since returned to Australia, was stabbed in the stomach.

He was treated at the Bali International Medical Centre in Kuta but left at about 4.30pm on Friday.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said officials from the Australian consular officials in Bali were talking with local authorities about the incident.

“Consular officers have been in contact with one of the men and have offered consular assistance,” the spokesperson said on Saturday.

They also confirmed that one of the men had returned to Australia, but would not provide further details.

Police in Bali have said the attacker was not yet known but that he was believed to be a foreigner.

Two local people whose identities were not known were also injured in the fight.

The bar where the incident occurred is the same place where former North Melbourne AFL coach Dean Laidley was hit over the head with a bottle in October, and his son left with a broken jaw following a fight.

In 2009, a 22-year-old New Zealand man was killed after being attacked in the nightclub by two employees and another man, all of whom were later convicted of murder.

It is understood that Australian officials are also concerned that Bali is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for Australian teenagers taking part in “schoolies” celebrations.

The Bounty Discotheque is on the same street where an Australian teenager, in Bali to celebrate finishing school, was electrocuted late last month while walking with friends.
