ONE man has died and two others have been seriously injured after a car crossed onto the wrong side of a western Sydney highway and crashed head-on into another car.
Police had started conducting point duty at the intersection of the Hume Highway and Cabramatta Road, Cabramatta, as the traffic lights were being upgraded about 8.30pm on Wednesday.
At 10.30pm, a westbound Holden Commodore stationwagon with two men in it travelled through the intersection, despite police directions, and began travelling the wrong way up the Hume Highway.
After about 500m of travelling west in the eastbound lane, the car crashed head-on into an oncoming Honda Prelude, which was being driven by a male.
The driver of the Commodore died at the scene.
The male passenger was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he is in a serious condition.
The driver of the Honda Prelude was trapped in the car for some time before being freed and was taken to Liverpool Hospital with serious leg injuries.

The Hume Highway remained closed until 5.30am.
Police have formed a critical incident investigation team to examine the incident.
