Ousted CAR pres. reinstated Seleka head

The mostly Muslim Seleka group in the Central African Republic (CAR) has reinstated former President Michel Djotodia as its leader months after he quit presidency amid the violence in the country.

Colonel Christian Djuma Narkoyo, the deputy spokesman for Seleka’s military wing, said on Saturday that the group had decided to reinstate Djotodia as its leader during a meeting in the northern town of Birao.

Two other founding Seleka commanders Nourredine Adam and Mohamed Dhaffane had also been chosen as Djotodia’s deputies, added Narkoyo.

“They have all been reinstated as they are the founders of the movement and they must stay in place,” Narkoyo said, adding, “We recognize them as leaders and will work with them.”

The Central African Republic spiraled into chaos in March last year when Seleka fighters overthrew former President Francois Bozize, and brought Djotodia to power. Bozize fled the country after his ouster.

However, Djotodia resigned and went into exile in Benin in January after his government came under intense pressure over its failure to contain the violence between ethnic communities in the CAR.

The mainly Christian anti-Balaka militiamen in the country have been raging violence against Muslims over the past months, many of whom have escaped the country to avoid being killed by the militia.

The new report comes as Seleka and anti-Balaka leaders are slated to hold peace talks in the neighboring Republic of Congo later this month after months of fierce fighting.

On December 5, 2013, France invaded the CAR after the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution giving the African Union and Paris the go-ahead to send troops to the country.

However, the deployment of the French and African Union forces has done little to end the ongoing violence in the country.
