Pakistan to test fire N-capable missile

The nuclear-capable missile has an effective operation range of up to 110 miles and is capable of being armed with both nuclear and conventional high-explosive warheads.

The new ballistic missile–dubbed as Nasr– is a Battlefield Range Ballistic Missile (BRBM) that uses the solid fuel propellant system.

The test is the third of its kind to be conducted by the Pakistani Armed Forces in recent times.

Nasr is scheduled to be carried out by the end of the month, in less than 20 days after Islamabad test-fired a short-range ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Hatf III missile, which has a range of more than 290 kilometers (200 miles), was launched during a military training drill on May 10, 2012.

Hatf III missile test followed an earlier test in April, when Pakistani military officials test fired a Shaheen-1A intermediate-ranged missile days after India announced that it had successfully test fired a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a 1.5-ton nuclear warhead from a military base off the country’s eastern coast of Orissa.

Pakistan routinely tests various missiles to match those of India. However, Pakistani authorities have frequently reiterated that nuclear deterrence is the basis of the country’s security policy and they have no intention of using the missiles aggressively.

Pakistan carried out nuclear tests in 1998 just days after rival India launched its own tests. The two countries, that have fought three wars against each other since 1947, regularly carry out missile tests in a display of their military prowess.
