Pakistan’s nominee for PM faces arrest

The warrant, which was issued on Thursday for Shahabuddin’s alleged illegal import of drugs, came just hours after his nomination, The Associated Press reported.

In 2010, Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force began investigating Shahabuddin’s alleged role in a scandal involving the illegal import of ephedrine, a drug, which can be used to make methamphetamine. Shahabuddin used to serve as the health minister at the time.

The 65-year-old is also a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly and leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the south of the Punjab province.

The decision to replace Gilani followed a Tuesday ruling by Pakistan’s Supreme Court, which disqualified him from holding office retroactive to April 26 when he was convicted of contempt of court for failing to pursue alleged corruption charges against Zardari.

Shahabuddin had filed nomination papers ahead of a scheduled vote in the parliament on Friday on his assumption of premiership. However, by Thursday evening, two other senior PPP figures, Qamar Zaman Kaira and Raja Pervez Ashraf, were being mentioned as likely alternative candidates.
