“All the work Gobekli Tepe builders put into carving those pillars,
erecting them, erecting walls between them at a later stage… is in many
ways dwarfed by the amount of time and work and energy
they put into covering them over again.”

Gobekli Tepe in Turkish means “Potbelly Hill,” an archaeological site about eight miles
northeast of Sanliurfa not far from the Syrian border. The region’s water comes
from the Euphrates, the longest river of Western Asia, that originates
upstream from Keban, Elazig Province in eastern Turkey.

Return to Part 1.

June 26, 2012  Gobekli Tepe, Turkey  – After the sun had risen to completely light up Gobekli Tepe, I interviewed geologist Robert M. Schoch, Ph.D., inside the Gobekli Tepe excavation. I asked him if given that Gobekli Tepe’s creation and purpose is perhaps the greatest archaeological and historical mystery on the planet today, what does Dr. Schoch speculate happened a thousand years after the elegant, bizarre, strangely eerie pillars, totem, Urfa man and other sculptures were erected in circles over 30 hilltop acres to cause Someone to cover the whole site back over with dirt?

Interview:

Robert M. Schoch, Ph.D., Professor of Geology, Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts:  “This, I believe, is a question that ties in with the end of the last ice age when as a geologist I believe that there were catastrophic things happening on Earth. I believe the dramatic warming and the glaciers melting tied in with major rains, major floods. I believe there were earthquakes and volcanic activity that would have been set off at least in part by the release of pressure when glaciers melted at higher latitudes. But I think this all ties back ultimately to solar outbursts – that the sun at that time underwent a series of major solar outbursts unlike anything we have seen in historic times.

June 7, 2011, sunspot activity culminated in a gigantic Coronal Mass Ejection (CME),
which produced a major burst of solar wind headed for Earth. Direct solar particle
impact can take out orbiting satellites, interrupt power grids and
cause electromagnetic havoc. Image by SOHO.

Intense Sunspot Activity 8,000 to 11,400 Years Ago

An October 27, 2004 study, led by Sami Solanki of the Max Planck Institute in Germany, used carbon-14 in dead and buried trees to learn about sunspot activity going back as far as 11,400 years. Solanki’s conclusion is that sunspot activity hasn’t been as intense as it is now for at least 8,000 years or more. More sunspots is usually linked to increased solar activity. The implication is that scientists might be able to better understand why the climate has changed in the past and how future changes can be more accurately predicted depending upon sunspot fluctuations.

Anthony Peratt, Ph.D. Dr. Peratt assembled petroglyphs known as “squatter man” to compare
with his lab plasma electrical discharge in his hypothesis that “immense and terrifying plasma
configurations were seen in the sky of our ancestors.” Source: Thunderbolts.info.

[ Editor’s Note:  Electrical engineer, Anthony Peratt, Ph.D., compared the “squatter man” petroglyphs above with his plasma electrical discharge lab experiments that produced a disk or donut-like torus around a linear discharge column bent by magnetic fields induced by intense current flow. From the viewpoint of the observer, the edges of the upper disk may appear to point up forming “arms” and those of the lower torus may appear to point down forming “legs.”  The underlying “hourglass” pattern, with many subtle variations, occurs around the world.

Dr. Peratt wrote in his December 6, 2003, paper for IEEE Transactions On Plasma Science entitled “Characteristics for the Occurrence of a High-Current, Z-Pinch Aurora as Recorded in Antiquity:   “As the same morphological types are found worldwide, the comparisons suggest the occurrence of an intense aurora, as might be produced if the solar wind had increased between one and two orders of magnitude millennia ago.” ]

Schoch:  “We have petroglyphs, which I believe humans were recording major solar outbursts and plasma – that is electrically charged particles hitting the atmosphere and seen in the skies. We can now reconstruct such plasma events in the lab (for comparison to petroglyphs), but have not seen in historical times.

In fact, I think that on Easter Island we have some very good records of this in the rongorongo script, which I believe is a copy of a record of a major solar outburst.”

Easter Island Echo About
What Threatened Gobekli Tepe?

Rongorongo is a system of glyphs discovered in the 19th Century on Easter Island that appears to be writing or proto-writing. Numerous attempts at decipherment have been made, none successfully. Although some calendar and possible genealogical information has been identified, not even these glyphs can actually be read. Oral history suggests that only a small elite was ever literate and that the tablets were sacred. If rongorongo does prove to be writing, it could be one of as few as three or four independent writing inventions in human history.

The Easter Island Statue Project is excavating the mysterious Easter Island moai, which are pillar-like statues looking skyward from heads placed in various parts of Easter Island. Recent excavations have shown the heads have full pillar-like bodies covered with ancient petroglyphs below the ground surface.

Was the Threat A Combination
of Comets and Solar Flares?

Illustration of outer space object headed for Earth impact.

Schoch:  “I would also point out there has been a lot of  talk of comets at the end of the last ice age. These are not incompatible. What we have at the end of the last ice age is a relatively slow and gradual warming. Then we have a cold snap.

CALLED THE YOUNGER DRYAS.

The Younger Dryas. The cold snap starts about 10,099 B. C., about 12,900 years ago, and it gets very cold. Then a thousand plus years later, you have a dramatic warming spell, which occurs over a very short period of time – maybe three years, maybe literally overnight.
And my working hypothesis as a geologist and looking at all the data is that there is lots of evidence for a comet hitting Earth or exploding in the upper atmosphere at the beginning of the Younger Dryas and causing that cold spell. And then the cold spell ending at the very end of the last ice age with a major solar outburst.

THAT WOULD HAVE INCLUDED ALL KINDS OF FLOODING.

All kinds of flooding, and the flooding is important and would tie right in with a major solar outburst because what you would have is dramatic warming of the climate. I think there was such a major solar outburst that you would literally have what we would view as huge lightning strikes, plasma, hitting the Earth and causing glaciers to melt very rapidly causing water to evaporate. Once you put a lot of water into the atmosphere,  it can’t stay there forever. The atmosphere can only hold so much water before it precipitates out again. And so you would have horrendous rains that would cause flooding, a literal cataclysm on many levels.

Releasing all that pressure from glaciers at high latitudes would have cascading ramifications, I believe, around the globe of earthquake activity, volcanic activity. You would have these cascading effects.

What Alerted Gobekli Tepe Intelligence
to Cover Up the Pillars?

WHAT IS SO BAFFLING IS WHAT INTELLIGENCE  WORKING AND TERRAFORMING ON THE EARTH WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EVEN ANTICIPATE OR KNOW WHAT WAS COMING IN ORDER TO REBURY 30 ACRES OF THE GOBEKLI TEPE SITE?

Yes, and what is becoming apparent based on the data is that the sun undergoes even longer cycles on the order of thousands of years and one of those cycles, I believe, is about a ten thousand to twelve thousand year cycle of relative instability when the sun does undergo these major solar outbursts. Essentially the sun is not a stable entity. It has to re-equilibrate, calibrate, itself periodically from a geological perspective. And we know this happened now based on data of solar activity as recorded in various isotopes at the end of the last ice age. Perhaps they had that knowledge that something was coming. Perhaps after they saw the first solar outburst, the first activity developing in the sun, they had the concept about what was going to happen. Maybe they had an inkling that when they start seeing certain activity they better prepare for it.

HAVE YOU AND DR. SCHMIDT ESTIMATED WHAT THE VOLUME IN CUBIC TONS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NECESSARY TO RECOVER 30 ACRES OF THE STANDING PILLARS?

I think he’s tried to make some estimates – we’re talking hundreds of thousands of cubic meters – an incredible amount because you essentially have an artificial mountain over what is Gobekli Tepe as we know it. But remember, the site is huge as you mentioned. The volume to cover all of that and part of it is how high is it covered? But I think the bottom line is that all the work Gobekli Tepe builders put into carving those pillars, erecting them, erecting walls between them at a later stage. All the work and time and energy they put into it is in many ways dwarfed by the amount of time and work and energy they put into covering them over again.”
