Gary Burns is new SA police chief

Deputy Commissioner Gary Burns will become Commissioner of South Australia Police, replacing outgoing Commissioner Mal Hyde.

He will take over when Commissioner Hyde retires on July 20.

Deputy Commissioner Burns has been with the police for 43 years and was made deputy commissioner in 2007.

He has served as the Assistant Commissioner in Operations Support Service, Human Resources Service, Southern Operations Service and Northern Operations Service.

Deputy Commissioner Burns is a member of the National Counter Terrorism Committee and is a recipient of the Australian Bravery Medal and Australian Police Medal. He was appointed to the role of Deputy Commissioner in April 2007.

Commissioner Hyde said his successor is highly regarded within South Australia Police for his extensive experience across operational, policy and executive areas.

“I am confident he will carry out the duties of his new position with distinction,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner Burns paid tribute to Commissioner Hyde, saying crime rates had dropped under his watch.

“My aim is to build on these successes and lead a police organisation that is responsive to the community’s needs and expectations – while at the same time increasing our visibility and community engagement,” Deputy Commissioner Burns said.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said Mr Burns was selected from a field of excellent candidates and had the experience and credentials to continue the force’s fine record in reducing crime and serving the state.

“Gary Burns has devoted his career to serving the people of this state and there is no better candidate to lead South Australia Police into a new era,” Mr Weatherill said in a statement.

“His wide-ranging experience in law enforcement and his academic qualifications are typical of the enormous diversity of skills and experience within SA Police.”
