Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says his recent comment about the Prime Minister’s clothing was “inappropriate banter”.

A fortnight ago feminist author Germaine Greer told the ABC’s QA program that Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s jackets did not suit her “big arse”.

“Every time she turns round, you’ve got that strange horizontal crease, which means they’re cut too narrow in the hips,” Ms Greer said.

“You’ve got a big arse, Julia. Just get on with it.”

Yesterday vision emerged of a woman asking Mr Abbott about Ms Gillard’s jackets at a community forum in Sale on Tuesday night.

Mr Abbott responded: “Germaine Greer was right on that subject.”

But today, Mr Abbott has told Channel 9 he should not have made the comment.

“Well look, it was an off-the-cuff remark responding to an observation of a member of the public,” he told interviewer Karl Stefanovic.

“I shouldn’t have said it and I regret it Karl – I guess it was inappropriate banter.”
