Prince to visit region

CASTLEMAINE will play host to a royal guest today when Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark arrives in town.

Prince Frederik will visit Castlemaine’s George Weston food processing plant this morning as part of his Victorian engagement on his Australian tour.

Frederick will be without Australian-born wife Mary for his Castlemaine visit, with the princess travelling to Pakenham Springs Primary School in Melbourne’s south-east this morning.

The prince will arrive at the George Weston plant at 10am before returning to Melbourne this afternoon.

Mount Alexander Shire mayor Janet Cropley said she was not surprised at the prince’s interest in the George Weston plant.

“I think it is very exciting, but it’s not surprising he is coming out to the George Weston,” she said.

“We buy pigs from his homeland, so it makes sense he would be interested to come out to Castlemaine.

“They say the Prince has a genuine interest in environmental sustainability and they have undertaken a very exciting project out at George Weston, so it is not surprising Prince Frederik has taken interest.”

Although the prince’s visit has not been highly publicised, Cr Cropley said the Castlemaine community was excited about Frederik’s royal visit.

“It has all been kept fairly quiet, but I have had a few calls about his plans on the day,” she said.

“I don’t think there is going to be too much opportunity for the local people to see him, but I do think there will be people around hoping to get a glance.

“One very conscientious individual was even going to call the Danish Embassy to see if they could get Prince Frederik to come out their way!”
