Pro-Morsi students protest in Cairo

The riot police fired tear gas and bird shots to disperse the supporters of the ousted president from the iconic square on Sunday evening.

The violence erupted after thousands of students defied an anti-protest law and marched on the square to denounce the recent killing of a university student.

Meanwhile, students are furious about the sentencing of 21 Alexandrian female protesters to eleven years in jail.

Before heading to the square, students set a police truck ablaze outside the Cairo University campus.

The mass rally comes despite warnings from authorities of a firm response to any unauthorized protests.

Violence in Egypt has been on the rise since the army-backed interim government passed a new law that criminalizes demonstrations without permits.

Under the new law, protest organizers are obliged to get permission for demonstrations and hand in the names and addresses of all the people planning to join.

The law authorizes the security forces to use tear gas, water cannons, smoke grenades, warning shots, rubber bullets, and even live ammunition against unauthorized demonstrators after issuing warnings. It also says protesters can be imprisoned for up to five years if convicted of crimes such as covering their faces and carrying weapons while participating in rallies.

Turmoil has intensified in Egypt since July 3 when the Egyptian army removed Morsi from office. Hundreds of protesters, mostly Morsi’s supporters, were killed or wounded during the deadly violence that broke out afterwards.

Tensions are again building up across Egypt as a panel tasked with drawing up a new constitution started a second day of voting. The new constitution would grant more powers to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and could ban Islamic parties completely.
