Protesters demand justice for Trayvon

Protesters marched from Malcolm X Park on 16th Street NW to Freedom Plaza on Saturday to call for equality and impartiality in the case of Trayvon Martin — the 17-year-old black teen, who was shot dead by George Zimmerman on February 26.

Martin was unarmed, and was carrying a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea, when he was fatally shot.

Teenagers, who attended the rally, urged for policy reforms in state laws and the judicial system.

“We are out here to find justice for him (Trayvon). Police is not doing any job. Police is a failed system in a lot of ways,” a teenage protester told Press TV.

A female demonstrator argued how the incident was allowed to happen, and why George Zimmerman, who is white and guilty of crime in shooting Trayvon, has not yet been arrested.

“I feel that race was involved, and I think the government and the nation knows that. We’re not just happy about it,” she said.

Another woman said, “One of the main reasons why Trayvon was killed is because somebody misunderstood what was going on. There was prejudice against someone’s dress.”

Others came to speak out for Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old Iraqi-born mother-of-five who was bludgeoned to death in her California home last month.

Alawadi was found beaten to death with a tire iron in her San Diego home alongside a note that read, “Go back to your own country you terrorist.”

The anger and emotions that protesters are feeling are not likely to simmer down any time soon.

Investigators have given little indication that the Martin or Alawadi cases are close to wrapping up as Americans passionate about their cases wait for resolve.
