Qld opens tenders on Aurukun bauxite lease

The Queensland government is calling for new expressions of interest over a vacated lease to mine bauxite on Cape York.

The Aurukun bauxite lease was first issued to French company Pechiney in 1975, but was not used for 28 years and was repealed.

The tender was then issued to Chinese miner Chalco in 2007, but the deal folded in 2011 because the company was unable to build an aluminium refinery – which was a key term of the lease.

On a visit to Cairns on Sunday, Premier Campbell Newman said the state government was calling for expressions of interest on the lease.

The successful applicant will not have to build a refinery.

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the government was keen for economic development which benefited traditional owners.

“We have only one condition attached to that process and that is that the successful party will be the one that can show the most benefit for the Aurukun community,” he told reporters.

Mr Seeney said a final decision on the tender would be made before the end of 2013.
