‘Racism endemic within UK police’

Richard Stone, a member of the panel investigating the death of Stephen Lawrence, a black British teenager who was killed in a racist attack in 1993, has spoken out against the routine racism within the British police, saying the blame rests with senior officers.

“Here we are 14 years later with the worst kind of blatant and violent racism by police. Even worse is that the officers appear to be doing it openly in front of colleagues from whom they have no fear of being reported,” said Stone.

“Such a group of constables could not be routinely racist like this without their seniors being aware, and telling them to stop. I fear this may alas be more than ‘just a few bad apples,” he added.

Stone’s condemnation comes as a Metropolitan Police officer faces the sack after he was convicted of hurling racial abuse at a Pakistani man.

Furthermore, the Metropolitan Police referred 10 complaints of alleged racism involving 18 police officers and one member of police staff to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

British police racism came under spotlight after a video recording and CCTV footage showed a police officer calling a 21-year-old black man a “n*****” and another officer kicking a 15-year-old black teenager to the ground and forcing him to his knees.
