The minibus, carrying eight women and two men, drove on to the crossing and hurled 30 meters down the track near the city of Lodz, Reuters reported on Monday. The crossing had a stop sign, but no barrier or guards.
“The impact was so strong that we cannot even recognize the make of the vehicle,” police officer Krzysztof Zielinski told broadcaster TVN 24. “None of the train passengers was hurt.”
A police spokesman said eight people died instantly while a ninth one died later in hospital.
In March, a head-on collision between two trains in southern Poland claimed 16 lives and 60 injuries.
