Reef report to dominate Queensland cabinet

Port development along Queensland’s coast will dominate a state cabinet meeting following a scathing report by UNESCO.

The report, released on Saturday, says the developments threaten the Great Barrier Reef’s world heritage status unless Australia makes substantial changes to its supervision of the area.

The report urges Australia not to permit the creation of separate new ports near the reef and asks for a strategic assessment of the area, implying that new developments should be postponed until that is complete.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has said he cannot accommodate some of the report’s chief recommendations. His office says the issue will dominate Monday’s cabinet meeting.

The state parliament will debate contentious legislation this week.

This includes the industrial relationship bill, which will give the attorney-general strike-busting powers, and the environment protection bill, which will see 90 pages wiped from the state’s Environment Protection Act.
