Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts says he understands if south east Queensland residents are feeling anxious about the threat of more storms.

More wild weather is expected today as residents continue to mop up after yesterday’s violent storms.

Large hail battered Brisbane’s south and nearby Logan yesterday – leaving suburbs blanketed by ice and causing roofs to collapse.

Police have confirmed a person who died during yesterday’s storms was a 42-year-old Logan man.

He was killed when a tree fell on his parked car at Hillcrest.

He was the only person in the vehicle.

Flash flood

There was flash flooding in some suburbs when the storms dumped more than 70 millimetres in some places.

A number of homes at Parkinson were inundated – damaged by hail or falling trees.

On the Darling Down west of Brisbane, several cars were caught in floodwaters as heavy rain caused flash flooding in several low-lying streets in Toowoomba.

Heavy rain with falls of up to 100 millimetres was reported in the Scenic Rim region south west of Brisbane.

One Boonah resident says the deluge lasted for about five hours.

‘Be ready’

Mr Roberts is attending a public workshop on the looming wet season in Gatton west of Brisbane and is urging residents to be prepared.

“I’m sure a lot of residents are a little bit anxious about this storm activity and we can understand that,” Mr Roberts said.

“The important message that is coming out of this workshop is it is just important to take basic steps for preparation.

“Be aware of the risks of your particular neighbourhood – if you live near creeks or rivers be aware of the potential for flooding.”

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) had warned residents to expect a summer of severe storms but the wild weather has arrived early.

Repeat

BOM forecaster Bryan Rolstone says there could be a repeat of the storms today.

“In fact it’s probably going to be the maximum activity today compared to yesterday,” he said.

“Some cells will be severe – not all the thunderstorms but some of them – and it doesn’t end at that.”

He says storms are forecast to continue throughout the weekend.
