Rivalry no motive: Pratt’s lover

A lover of the late billionaire Richard Pratt has denied initiating a claim against his estate to get back at his long-term mistress, Shari-Lea Hitchcock, a court has heard.

Madison Ashton also told the NSW Supreme Court yesterday she signed without reading a document agreeing to drop all claims against the Pratt family for a final payment of $50,000.

She said she wasn’t aware at the time it also contained a clause that any further contact or claims against the family would be considered extortion.

Instead, Ms Ashton said she believed the document outlined entitlements to Mr Pratt’s alleged promises to her, including an annual $500,000 allowance.

Ms Ashton has taken legal action against Mr Pratt’s widow Jeanne in relation to his estate, seeking damages for breach of contract.

She alleges Mr Pratt promised to provide her with a $500,000-a-year allowance, $36,000 for rent, $30,000 for travel expenses, a $100,000 car and two trust funds worth $2.5million each.

Ms Ashton claimed Mr Pratt promised the gifts on the condition she gave up working as an escort to become his mistress, but that she was paid only $410,000.

In her affidavit, Ms Ashton said Mr Pratt offered her the position of mistress during a visit to his penthouse.

During cross-examination Robert Richter QC, for the estate, suggested Ms Ashton only brought her claim against Mr Pratt’s estate ”to somehow get back at Shari-Lea”, who she said she feared but denied disliking.

”You hate her, don’t you?” he asked.

”No,” Ms Ashton replied.

Ms Ashton said she wasn’t aware that if successful in her claim, there would be less funds available for Ms Hitchcock.
