Rudd welcomes release of Bali boy

FOREIGN Minister Kevin Rudd has thanked Indonesian authorities in Bali for enabling the speedy release of an Australian youth caught with about $25 worth of marijuana.

The 14-year-old boy, from Morisset Park near Newcastle in NSW, will be released on December 4, after an Indonesian judge sentenced him to two months in prison.

The sentence takes into account time already served since the boy’s arrest on October 4.

Mr Rudd said he welcomed the court’s decision.

“I’m sure there are lessons to be learned by this young man as well,” he said in a statement.

He thanked Indonesian authorities for the “speedy way” the case had been conducted, which he described as being “against all Indonesian norms”.

He also acknowledged Australian consular staff in Bali who had given the boy and his family support throughout his trial.

“In overall terms, I think it’s good that this family and this young man, it looks like, will be home for Christmas,” he said.

Prosecutors had demanded the boy serve a custodial sentence of three months for using an illegal drug.

But the judge, Amser Simanjuntak, shaved one month off the sentence request when he delivered his ruling in a makeshift hearing room at the Denpasar District Court.

The boy has been in custody since he was arrested for possession of 3.6 grams of marijuana when police swooped on him and a 13-year-old friend outside a supermarket near Kuta Beach.
