Russia plans anti-US draft law

RIA Novosti cited a source in the state Duma as saying on Monday that the measures would be part of a “completely new law.”

The bill, submitted to Duma on Monday, proposes measures such as economic and visa sanctions or deportation from Russia of those who committed crimes against Russian citizens or were involved in covering them up.

The draft comes as a retaliatory move after the US Congress passed the ‘Magnitsky List’ on December 6, targeting people who have allegedly been involved in the death in custody of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in Moscow in 2009.

“It’s amazing that a country that created secret prisons on the territory of other countries where people are being tortured like in Dark Ages is lecturing others,” said Duma chairman Sergei Naryshkin.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the US law on Monday as “an anti-Russian prank” and urged Russian deputies to retaliate. “I’m sure the Federal Assembly will respond.”

Duma foreign affairs committee head Alexei Pushkov has also said that most Duma deputies support a firm response to the ‘Magnitsky List.’
