Russia seeks UN action on DPRK rocket

“It is absolutely appropriate to submit to the UN Security Council an issue of further actions in connection with that launch,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich said Friday.

This comes after Pyongyang on December 12 announced that it had launched a long-range rocket from the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, located in Cholsan County of North Pyongan Province, and successfully placed a satellite into orbit.

The European Union (EU) has also criticized North Korea’s recent move, threatening to impose a fresh round of sanctions on the country.

“The EU will consider an appropriate response, in close consultation with key partners… including possible additional restrictive measures,” EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement earlier this week.

North Korea, however, is adamant on continuing its space program with the country’s leader Kim Jong-un saying, “Satellite launches should continue for further development of the country’s science.”
