Russia stresses Iran’s regional role

In an interview with the London-based Arabic-language Al-Hayat newspaper, Churkin said the decision on the nature of the transition in Syria must be made by the Syrian people based on a political consensus reached by the authorities and opposition groups.

The Russian diplomat also regretted the decision not to invite Iran to the Syria Contact Group meeting, which is due to be held in the Swiss city of Geneva on June 30, highlighting that the Islamic Republic should play an influential role in negotiations aimed at the settlement of regional issues.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday that it was a mistake to exclude Iran from the talks in Geneva.

“Iran is an influential player in this situation and to leave it out of the Geneva meeting, I believe, is a mistake,” Lavrov said, adding that Washington’s opposition to Tehran’s participation was an example of “double standards.”

The United Nations has, however, said that joint UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan will engage Iran in efforts to restore calm in Syria.

Annan will brief Tehran after Saturday’s international meeting in Geneva and “will also ensure their [Iranians’] continued engagement,” UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said on Wednesday.

Annan “has been clear about the need for Iran to be part of the solution and so has the secretary general,” Nesirky noted.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
